A fireplace is something that is a part of our home and can be a focal point for us. But I also hear the same thing about old pieces of furniture. It doesn’t have to be a focal point. It can be a great conversation piece, a storage space, or a place for you to relax in the evening.
We don’t mean to be harsh about the potential of such things. The only thing that really makes them more important is the person who uses them.
My grandfather was a builder and the first time I was really struck by the importance of a fireplace is the first time I was in a house with a fireplace. I remember thinking, “Wow, this is a cool room, I want to go sit in this room and just be.” I loved the feeling of that place being mine, even though I couldn’t go and sit in it. It was like a part of me was living inside that fireplace.
My grandfather used to say, “I’m not building houses for people. I’m building houses for the people who come to my place.” That’s what he meant by reclaimed wood. He was building houses out of reclaimed wood. What a great way to use wood for a home. And this is why my family and I use reclaimed wood all the time. When we build our own home, we’re making it out of reclaimed wood.
The last thing I did was add more markers around the perimeter of the house.
When I was a kid, I would make a small piece of reclaimed wood. I never used it for anything other than that. For a house I built out of reclaimed wood, I used it as a marker to indicate where I was, where on my list of things to do. I never let myself fall in love.
Now that I’m living the life of a homeowner I’m using reclaimed wooden furniture and accents like reclaimed wood flooring. I may not be as crazy as I once was, but I still find that I have a knack for creating things out of wood, and I tend to use it like I used to. Like my dad used to say: “You can’t keep doing the same thing over and over, so you have to do something new.
I always get used to old furniture and stuff, so I don’t know exactly what sort of look to look at but I have a tendency to make things look the same. But I have a knack for creating something new in my house.
