So, what is this piece made from? It’s made out of pine slats in a combination of cedar and fir. It’s also got some kind of “cottonwood” effect. As a woodworker, I’ve never seen anything like this, so I know I’m in for a treat.
Its a great piece of art, but what is the best way to apply this? Well, I decided to paint it with acrylics. I do have a few friends who work at home that I am trying to get to hang with so I thought this would be a fun project for them too. The idea is to paint the slats white, then paint the pine with a dark brown and the fir with a light brown. I also wanted to add a little more detail to the wood.
I was just curious, so I went ahead and ordered some oak plywood and stained it with a light brown. I did think about painting it with one of the more popular stain and varnish, but then realized that I would just be wasting a great deal of time going through and changing colors. I ended up painting the slats with a light brown, then applying the oak stain. I used a combination of acrylic and varnish to give the wood the wood appearance.
While I was painting this, I noticed a few things about the scene that weren’t there. On a side note, I also noticed in the scene that the two vehicles were so close together that they were in a fairly close-up position.
In the scene, the large wood wall is the base of a table that sits on the floor. The two vehicles are a car and a truck. The car is so close to the wall that it was probably only a few inches out of reach. The truck is a few feet to the left of the wall. While it may be a simple mistake, it’s a subtle hint to me that the car is actually closer to the table than the truck.
The car and truck are in the same location because they’re two very different vehicles. The car is a classic, big car. It’s not a Toyota Corolla. It’s a Ford F-150. Not only is it a classic, it’s a beautiful piece of art for the wall.
