I am an accomplished wood burner from many years of practice, and I am always happy to share some of my tips and tricks to help with your wood-burning projects.
I had to think longer about that last sentence. Because wood comes in a wide variety of sizes, and because the different kinds of wood do not burn evenly or hot, there are a lot of things you can do to improve your wood-burning technique. For instance, you can put a lighter on your chimney and use that to put a few small pellets into the fire. If the fire is getting too hot, then you can add a few pellets or chips of wood in for extra smoke.
The other big thing to remember is that it’s not about how much wood you can put to heat your fire. It’s about how much smoke you get out of the fire. If you get too much smoke, you’re going to burn your house down. If you get a lot of smoke, then you’re going to have a fun time in the flames. I guess that’s why there are so many fireplaces and fireplaces in the first place.
Sure, you can have a fire in your fireplace. But if you have a big, open fireplace, then it’s going to suck all the smoke right out the chimney. You don’t want that because you’re going to have to keep the smoke out with the chimney, or else you’re going to get a heck of a headache in the morning.
I think there are a couple good reasons to have a fire in your fireplace. First, to give your fireplace a chance to get a good start before you do a nice job of keeping the smoke out (and give yourself some time to get your chimney cleaned out). Second, to give your fireplace a chance to get a good start before you do the nasty and horrible thing of blowing out an already open fireplace.
Like most wood stoves, my wood burning fire is my own creation. I bought the fire because I wanted something fun and easy for myself to make. I also wanted to have fun with it and not think about whether it would burn out before I could use it.
When you open the chimney it does just what it says on the tin but it does have some serious holes in it that give me a bad feeling. If you go inside the chimney and look for the holes you never find.
The chimney hole is where you need to make a little effort to get the wood inside. The wood will just slip out and you’ll have to put more hot coals in the bottom of the hole and then the wood will stick to the bottom of the hole. There’s not a big hole in the chimney, but it’s a lot of work.
When we’ve done the chimney we can do some very interesting things. We can move the fire from the chimney hole to the bottom and it gets there. We can cut into the fire, put it in the chimney hole, and that will get it in a very good place. Theres a lot of work to do.
