I can see where the heat shield was designed to protect the stove from the heat from the fire or the inside of the fireplace, but I have to wonder if that was also an attempt to protect the fire from the heat.
There are lots of ways to make a fire hotter and more efficient, but by the same token there are ways to make it colder and more inefficient. The same thing goes for the heat shield. If the heat shield were designed to be able to shield a wood stove from the heat from the fire or the inside of the fireplace, then it wouldn’t be good for the wood stove in the first place. And I think that is a good point.
If the heat shield is designed to shield the heat from the fire, it will almost certainly be a large block of wood. You could cut the wood as small as possible and then stick it on the heat shield and it will only be able to absorb some of the heat. But if you stick it on the heat shield, it will have to absorb enough heat to melt the wood. It will take a lot of heat to melt a block of wood.
This is one of the problems with having a wood stove in your home. The stove is an energy hog so if you have a wood-fired grill or an electric wood stove, you are going to have smoke coming out of your walls and your house. If you have a wood stove in your house, you are going to have to find a way to keep your house from smelling that way.
We are living in an age where our electricity use is at an all-time high, so having a wood stove is almost a necessity these days. This is especially true if you are not doing a lot of cooking. Also, if you have a wood stove, you are going to have a lot of wood in your house, which means you are going to have to keep it clean.
